My review of Live Messenger 2011

So I installed Live Messenger 2011 for some unknown reason. Let me tell you, it sucks! You can no longer have any nickname you want.

Problem #1:
Your nickname will now be “Firstname Lastname”. If you’re trying to change your name a website will load and you have 2 textboxes, one with your firstname and one with your lastname. I tried to delete my lastname but I was required to have some text in that textbox. This made me a bit angry since I want to display the nickname I choose and not my full name.

Problem #2:
Eyecandy. I dont like eyecandy. I want my applications to load fast and just get the job done! I dont care for cool flashes and animated flowers and other bullshit.
It does now take 2 seconds extra when opening MSN everytime I want to send a messege and it really annoys me. 2 seconds doesn’t sound like much but when you have to wait 2 seconds over and over you start to get annoyed.

Problem #3:
It really looks like Microsoft tries to make some sort of community with MSN and that’s the worst problem about Live Messenger 2011.

My solution to the problem is to install another messenger client that can replace this bullshit. Like:

My Small vBulletin 4 CMS Review

I was at a friends house yesterday and he let me play with his vBulletin-CMS admin-panel. I must say that it wasn’t really what I was expecting. I’m glad I tried it out before I did buy it.

The style-manager didn’t work as I expected. I thought I was going to choose colors with ease from the color-panel and then just push a button to save it but it turn out the color-panel was just for reference. And I have to use the find and replace tool to search and replace in all files… (?)

I asked him how to edit the mainpage so I could have my forum there and not any articles and he didn’t know.
I looked myself but couldn’t find the option to change it. How do I change the mainpage?

I’m sorry to say that I dont really see the advantage of vBulletin over free forum-scripts like MyBB, SMF or PHPBB (The new version of PHPBB is much better than the old ones…)

It was not what I was expecting at all.

So why would I pay to use vBulletin over other free forum-scripts? I dont know. They’re just as good in my opinion.

Slow Loading Videos = The Fall Of YouTube?

Me and several thousands of YouTube users have noticed that YouTube have started to load extremely slow over the last couple of months. Some videos play for a couple of seconds and then start to buffer forever. Last year it was fine but now in 2010 it is worse than ever before.

Are they trying to save bandwidth or what is going on? There is nothing wrong on my end. I have a 100 mbit Internet-connection here at home and I’ve tried it with several computers and browsers. This will make people use other video-sites like Veoh.com, Revver.com, Viddler.com or some of the other thousands of videos-sites.

MakoSolutions Review

I’ve had a dedicated server with MakoSolutions for a couple of months now so I thought I would write a small review of MakoSolutions.
They have very cheap dedicated servers, they are even fully managed.
But the downside is that the support is very slow. I wouldn’t recommend that you host any important sites there. My server have never been down but if the support takes hours to respond to a support-ticket with priority “Urgent” then I dont want to think of how long the server could stay down.

Some people say “You get what you pay for” and in this case it seems to be true.

A lot of webmasters have been listening to Matt Cutts advice. He says focus on your content and the backlinks will come automatically. This is true for most websites but you really cant compete with the people who build their links and you need links to your website to rank well, otherwise you’re out of the competition.

So get to work and find people you want to trade links with. It’s good if you have at least 2 websites both with some Google Pagerank.

Do not trade links like this:
Your Website link to Friends Website.
and
Friends Website link to Your Website.

Google wont value those linktrades as much as other links.

You better trade links like this:
Your first website links to friends first site.
And your friends second website links to your second website.
A bit more advance than a regular linktrade but your sites will gain more link-value this way.

Remember to not take SEO advices from Google too seriously. They just want as relevant search results as possible, but you want the traffic, right?
